CATBIRD / LIONBULL
Leonardo Linares
Making various figures with paper and cardboard, cartonería (papier-mâché), has been of great importance in Mexican folk art and is often used in creating Alebrijes, Judas, as well as skulls and Catrinas for Day of the Dead celebrations.
Descendants of Pedro Linares, an artisan credited with creating the original “Alebrijes,” the family Linares inherited the trade of cartonería. Alebrijes are sculptures of different sizes that are painted with bright colors and combine varying physiognomic aspects of different animals. Leonardo Linares Vargas is one of the heirs of this popular tradition. His grandfather Don Pedro Linares taught him the craft. This art has given him international fame, winning awards for his exceptional work and artistic dedication.
